Joining Southeastern's faculty in 2010, Barbara Nixon has held a variety of positions, ranging from leadership in Fortune 500 corporations to college educator in both faith-based and public universities. She firmly believes that in "In times of change, learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists" (Eric Hoffer). Students in her courses often find themselves exploring public relations theory in light of current world developments and technology.
Nixon's journey to Southeastern was definitely a circuitous one. After growing up in a small town in Maine, she moved to Atlanta for high school, then completed her BA and MA at Auburn University. She married her college sweetheart, Kevin Nixon, and together they have lived in Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Georgia and now Florida; these relocations were a blend of military and corporate moves. Before moving to Florida, she completed her coursework and comprehensive examination for her PhD in training and performance improvement. She is currently completing her dissertation in leadership development in a faith-based organization. Nixon and her husband have four children, two college-aged and two in middle school.
In the Southeastern Department of Communication, Nixon serves as public relations professor and interim chair of the department. She is a member of the Florida Public Relations Association and the Presbyterian Communicators Network, is a past president and life member of the International Listening Association, and serves in a leadership role within the Vine Community at First United Presbyterian Church of Lakeland.
Nixon is an active blogger at her site Public Relations Matters, and she can also be followed on LinkedIn.
Nixon teaches across the public relations and journalism spectrum at Southeastern University, including the following courses: Public Relations Applications, Journalism, Writing for Public Relations and Advertising, Corporate Public Relations, Communication Seminar, and Social Media for Public Relations and Journalism. She is the advisor to the SEU Florida Public Relations Club. Her research interests include social media's impact on business and society, leadership development, listening, and volunteerism. |
